It was my second year in the National Formula Vee Championships, and the hunt for a new sponsor was on. A friend connected me with Thula Exhausts in Alberton, and they didn’t just agree to help — they came in with style. They built me a brand-new exhaust system, tuned perfectly to bring our maximum decibels down to below the 115 dB limit.
When the work was done, my car looked every bit the part — gleaming in her fresh livery, sounding sharper and more refined than ever. The owner of Thula Exhausts smiled as he admired her. “Let’s get some photos before something can happen,” he said.
He was right to hurry.
The clock was against us, and I passed scrutineering with minutes to spare. There was just enough time to head out for practice, shake the car down, and feel how she handled with her new setup.
The track was busy, with cars jostling for space. I settled into a rhythm, the engine singing behind me, confidence building with each lap. But traffic tightened in one of the faster sections — too many cars, too close. One small miscalculation, one wrong angle, and there was nowhere to go. I hit the wall.
What began as a day of excitement ended in the bitter silence of a damaged car.
Looking back, it’s not just a racing lesson — it’s a life lesson. Opportunities, like gaps on the track, can close in an instant. If you see one, take it. Because in racing, as in life, tomorrow might never come.
Lesson learned: Never put off what you can do today.
